During the 1960's, the Pathet-Lao issued stamps and banknotes for use in its control zones. The banknotes issue was an act that aimed to express independence and disengagement from the Kingdom of Laos. The banknotes were printed in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, where the banknotes of Vietnam, Mongolia, Cuba and Cambodia were also printed. The Pathet Lao banknotes were printed in April 1968 and distributed in the Pathet Lao control zones.

Seven banknotes were printed with denominations of 1, 10, 20, 50, 200 and 500 Kip (CN 19A-24). All of the banknotes represent Socialist themes such as clinics, factories workers in the Pathet-Lao controlled zones, farmers in the fields and fishermen. Some of them depict war views such as Pathet Lao fighters preparing a Bamboo ambush (10 Kip), armed fighters carrying ammunition (200 Kip) and fighters shooting USA Force aircraft in Xieng Khouang (500 Kip).

The banknotes have common designs that include Lao embroidery. The Kingdom emblems, such as the three headed elephant, are not represented on the Pathet Lao banknotes. The inscription is written only in Lao only without French, unlike the Kingdom of Laos banknotes. The Pathet Lao slogan, that became later the Lao PDR slogan, is written on the front: Laos: Peace, Independent, Democracy, Neutrality, Longevity. On the back we find: The Lao Central National Committee.

On June 15, 1976, the Kingdom of Laos banknotes were withdrawn from circulation and the Pathet-Lao banknotes became the only legal banknotes in use. The new currency was introduced at an exchange rate of one Pathet-Lao Kip to 10 Royal Kip. In 1979, the Pathet-Lao banknotes were withdrawn from circulation and new Lao PDR banknotes were printed and distributed to the public.
